Beaune 1er Cru Cuvée Hugues et Louis Bétault

Domaine des Hospices de Beaune

Albert Bichot’s view

Intense color precedes intense fruitiness on the nose, with a bouquet of ripe black fruits. Very pleasant on the palate, with ripe tannins and a hint of acidity, offering great potential for evolution.

Food pairings

Spicy accents to match with lamb tagine, smoked sausage or vegetable wok.

Beaune 1er cru Grèves is the mainstay of this cuvée, supported by Les Aigrots and Le Clos de la Mignotte. Les Grèves is located in the middle of the slopes, with excellent exposure (east) and well-drained, stony soil. It's these dominant limestone and sandy soils that give this cuvée its refined attack on the palate. In turn, the Aigrots dominate the often opulent mid-palate, thanks to its heavier clays. On the finish, the Mignotte (a young vine) confirms its greediness. This subtle blend makes this wine rapidly accessible, delighting even the most impatient.

History of the cuvée

In the 17th century, Hugues Bétault saved the Hôtel-Dieu from ruin during wars and epidemics. He built an airy infirmary and acquired land that was transformed into gardens and a vegetable patch. After his death, his brother Louis in turn made several generous donations to the Hospices de Beaune.
