The style of Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru wines
Mazis-Chambertin wines are distinguished by their restrained power and refined elegance. A deep ruby to dark garnet color heralds the wine's concentration and density. The nose opens with ripe red fruits such as black cherry and raspberry, accompanied by discreet floral notes of violet and faded rose.
With age, the aromas become more complex, revealing nuances of blackberry, blackcurrant, cocoa and sometimes a touch of spice, creating a rich, nuanced palette. On the palate, Mazis-Chambertin has a silky, full-bodied texture, with fine, precise tannins that structure the wine without weighing it down. The balance between power, finesse and freshness gives it exceptional length, and the best vintages can be kept for fifteen to thirty years, evolving towards deeper, more persistent flavors.

The terroir of Mazis-Chambertin
Located on the eastern slope of Morey-Saint-Denis, Mazis-Chambertin enjoys a south-east exposure, ideal for capturing the sun from morning to early afternoon, favoring slow, steady ripening of the Pinot Noir grapes. The altitude varies between 230 and 260 meters, and the slope of the hillside ensures natural drainage that protects the roots from excessive humidity. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, combining brown clay and hard limestone, with pebbles and gravel that improve drainage and heat retention. This combination gives the wines a remarkable tannic structure, subtle minerality and distinctive aromatic richness, making Mazis-Chambertin a powerful yet elegant terroir.
It's a terroir on which the Hospices de Beaune are fortunate enough to own a splendid parcel of noble size on the Mazis-Hauts climat, enabling them to often offer more than 20 barrels at auction. It's no surprise that Albert Bichot makes this one of its "coup de coeur" cuvées at every wine auction.

Etymology and history
The Mazis-Chambertin appellation takes its name from the parcel "Mazis", derived from the Latin word massa, meaning "estate, mass of cultivated land", and from the name of the famous neighboring Chambertin, one of the most prestigious climats on the Côte de Nuits. Located in the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis, this vineyard is part of the historic Chambertin area, which has been cultivated since the Middle Ages, notably by the Cistercian monks of Cîteaux Abbey. Mazis-Chambertin, like its Grand Cru neighbors, has survived the centuries by remaining faithful to Burgundian viticulture, with particular attention paid to soil and exposure to produce exceptional wines.
