Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges: charity auction and exceptional wines in Côte de Nuits
The Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges: almost 800 years of history
It was in the 13th century, around 1270, that the Hospices de Nuits were founded, at the end of the reign of Saint-Louis and the advent of the Duke of Burgundy Robert II. This hopital-vigneron (winemaking hospital) was thus born two centuries before its illustrious neighbor, the Hospices de Beaune, founded in 1443. Less well known but just as prestigious as its Beaune equivalent, the Hospices de Nuits operates in exactly the same way, combining real medical activity, an indispensable support for the local population, and a high-level wine estate whose wines are sold at auction.
From local sickbay to world-famous winegrower's hospital
Originally, L'Hôpital des Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges was a sickbay opened in 1270 and completely destroyed during the civil and religious wars. In 1633, the hospital, with just 4 beds, moved into a modest house on the banks of the Meuzin, purchased by Guillaume Labye, the King's attorney.
In 1684, the location was unsuitable, and it was decided to move the establishment, still on the banks of the Meuzin. In 1689, construction of the current hospital began, under the responsibility and devotion of chaplain Antide Midan. The 16-bed Saint-Laurent ward was built in 1692. Gradually, the "maladreries" of neighboring communes were attached to it, and a Management Committee composed of the notables of Nuits was created.
The wine heritage of the Nuits-Saint-Georges hospital has been built up over time, in the Burgundian tradition, thanks to numerous donations and bequests since 1633. The first vines were bequeathed in 1688: two ouvrées donated by Hugues Perdrizet. A tribute was paid to him with a cuvée in his name. Donations from local families, such as Noblet and Jeanniard, followed over the centuries. Spiritual reasons, but also the desire to improve the care of the sick and elderly, explain these transfers of vines to the hospital. This charitable impulse has spanned the centuries.
Thanks to these donations and the success of the auction, a new hospital opened its doors in 2018. Its premises thus offer all the comfort and security of a modern care and reception structure.
Domaine des Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges: 12 hectares and 19 wines under the management of Jean-Marc Moron, winemaker
With more than 12 hectares, the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges estate is made up mainly of vintages from the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, covering a large proportion of the slopes and terroirs of this prestigious appellation. Each year, Jean-Marc Moron, the talented estate manager, vinifies 19 different cuvées. They will all be sold at auction on the second Sunday in March following the harvest.
