Tasting
A yellow hue, then a citrus nose with some yellow stone-fruits aromas, some white flowers and nuts / honey too. The mouth is dense but with some nice tension too. Definitely a very fine Burgundy wine from a famous terroir in Beaune.
This cuvée has been produced from a vineyard situated at an altitude of about 250m and facing east on a gentle slope. The vines are planted in a rather stony soil where beehives have given way to Chardonnay, allowing for the production of a wine of great finesse, with a strong structure on the finish. The parcel is arguably one of the most beautiful terroirs in Beaune and the wines have a huge potential for ageing with grace and elegance.
Food matching
This Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Hughes & Louis Bétault from the Hospices de Beaune can be definitely enjoyed on its own, or with a mushroom soup, a shrimp risotto or will match well with goat cheese
History
Hugues Bétault was an Equerry and Councillor to the King of France, who in the mid-17th century saved the Hôtel-Dieu from ruin, following grievous wars and epidemics. He bought land for kitchen and flower gardens, and built an airy infirmary. His brother Louis made further generous donations, after the death of Hugues.
This cuvée Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Hughes & Louis Bétault was introduced at the auction for the first time at the Hospices de Beaune 2022 wine auction.
