Details regarding the number of barrels (lots) up for auction were revealed during the traditional press conference in Paris at Sotheby’s, the current auctioneer for the Hospices de Beaune wine auction, just a few weeks before the 166th auction, which will take place in the wine capital of Burgundy on the afternoon of Sunday, November 15, 2026.

The weather conditions of the 2026 vintage—hot and, above all, very dry—resulted in a small but high-quality harvest. The volume up for auction falls roughly between the 2021 vintage—marked notably by a severe frost—and the 2024 vintage, which was also modest in quantity.

Specifically, the Domaine des Hospices de Beaune will offer 432 barrels (excluding the “pièce du président”) and 2 feuillettes (half barrels) comprising 348 barrels of red wine and 84 barrels plus 2 half-barrels of white wine. 2026 Presidents' barrel: an exceptional Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru

During the press conference on October 22, 2026, details were also revealed about the Presidents’ Coin, also known as the Charity Coin. This off-catalog barrel will support the fight against rare diseases in 2026, benefiting two organizations (DEBRA and ARSLA). It is a Grand Cru from the Côte de Nuits, a splendid Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, produced from a plot of this legendary Grand Cru donated in 2025 by the Faiveley family to mark their bicentennial.

Analysis of the number of barrels offered for auction by the Hospices in 2026

The number of units for sale in 2026 is 20% lower than in 2025 (539 units) and 26% lower than the 2020–2025 average (585 units). Only 2021 had a lower figure (349.5 units). 2026 therefore has the second-lowest volume in the period, nearly on par with 2024 (439.5).

Key Points

• White wines are the hardest hit, down 37% compared to the average, versus a 23% decline for reds. Premium white wines are very scarce this year:
  - Meursault 1er Cru (22 bottles, less than half the average);
  - Corton Grand Cru white (12);
  - Bâtard-Montrachet (1.5 cases).

• Among reds, Beaune 1er Cru remains the leading category, with 126 cases, or 29% of the total. However, it has declined by nearly a quarter.

• The Côte de Nuits (–36% vs. average) and Pommard (–29%) saw the sharpest declines in red wines. For Pommard, the comparison is particularly unfavorable due to the high levels recorded in 2022–2023.

• Volnay is holding up the best (–15% vs. average). Volnay Santenots Jehan de Massol is even above its average, with 17 cases compared to 16.5.

• A few vintages are showing improvement compared to 2025:

  - Pouilly-Fuissé Françoise Poisard: 19 pieces compared to 10;
  - Auxey-Duresses Boillot: 6 compared to 4;
  - Corton Grand Cru blanc Docteur Peste: 6 versus 5.

• In the two good years of the period, 2022 and 2023, there were 753 and 802 bottles, respectively. The 2026 vintage therefore represents roughly 55–60% of a generous vintage.
