Albert Bichot tasting notes and comments
In 2021, the vintage was later than in recent years with low yields similar to last year. The colours are of excellent intensity. The wines reveal a fresh fruit character with a lovely vibrancy and average density. A return to a more classic style than that of the previous very sunny years.
Jean-Marc MORON has crafted wines of a remarkable fruity character with an aromatic expression typical of the varietal (raspberries, morello cherries) and reflecting the good level of maturity attained in the vineyards in 2021 (black cherries, blackcurrants and violets)
The structures are deep with lovely textured soft tannins. Thanks to the freshness of the vintage and the expertise of the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges’ vineyard manager, the typical traits of each terroir are faithfully expressed. This is true for Nuits-Saint-George’s southern (Prémeaux) and northern (Vosne-Romanée) sectors, as well as for the wines resulting from the blending of different terroirs. A Nuits that shows itself in all its glory in this 2021 vintage!
As in previous years, Albert Bichot will have the immense pleasure and honour of ageing these Côte de Nuits “grands vins” for a cause that remains as worthy as ever, that of the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges.
Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges vintage 2021 report by Jean-Marc Moron, Hospices de Nuits winemaker
"Afer a series of sunny vintages starting in 2018, the 2021 vintage at Domaine des Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges has seen a return to pure Burgundy tradition: perfect balance, clear typicity, small yield wines, and incredible balance," says Jean Marc Moron, regisseur of the estate, with its 13 hectares of vineyards.
"Growth was long and diffcult, but at the beginning of summer the vines began growing at an incredible speed, completely making up for the slow development in the spring. e good weather that set in mid-July held in check diseases like downy and powdery mildew, resulting in early veraison, when the grapes change color. is meant we were able to bring the harvest date forward to September 17. The grapes were healthy and beautifully ripe, with practically perfect acidity/alcohol balances. Once in the vat, we only needed six or seven days of maceration before starting fermentation using nothing but indigenous yeasts. Very little cap punching and just a few pumping over sessions were required to reveal the finesse, the elegance, and the fruit for certain wines, and restraint and power for others, depending on the different Nuits-Saint-Georges terroirs."
First tastings show a lovely ruby red color between raspberry and cherry, and a wide aromatic palette, with good structure and texture. The wines express the specificity of Burgundy: a huge diversity of Nuits-Saint-Georges crus in a small area, with the distinct identity of each parcel perceptible as in previous years. The common theme in 2021 is great purity and balance. All the wines of the Domaine des Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges hold the promise
of great ageing ability, with superb freshness, an abundance of fruit, and great balance. The cuvées are following in the tradition of the great cellaring vintages. At the Domaine des Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges, the vagaries of the climate in 2021 had little effect in the end on the identity of the wines which draw on parcels planted more than 40 years ago. This 2021 vintage favors quality over quantity: the 2021 harvest is composed of 109 pièces of wine
for sale, including one single pièce of white wine.
