Hospices de Beaune

Pommard Cuvée Suzanne Chaudron

PDF

Region: Côte de Beaune
Village: Pommard
Level: Village
AOC: Pommard
Grapes: Pinot Noir
Color: red

Tasting

This wine is a classical Pommard with good balance of freshness, elegance and tension. The bouquet shows a powerful, dark fruit character that continues on the mouth. A classic yet very interesting wine.

Food matching

Œufs en meurette (cooked in red wine sauce), pork sausages, slow-cooked duck, chestnut soup.

History

When the Cyrot-Chaudron couple left vineyards to the Hospices de Beaune in 1979, the gift included several plots of very ancient vines. When in perfect condition, yielding small quantities of fine fruit, these have been retained. There is virtually no Premiers Crus vineyard in this Cuvée, but over 40% was planted prior to 1959, with the oldest block dating from 1910. More than a third (35%) of the Cuvée comes from the Southeast facing, low-yield hillsides of Les Petits Noizons, which dominate Pommard from the north.

Monthelie Les Duresses Cuvée Lebelin

PDF

Region: Côte de Beaune
Village: Monthélie
Level: Village
AOC: Monthelie
Grapes: Pinot Noir
Color: red

Tasting

Shining pale red colour. Lively nose on red fruits and currants. Crisp and clean mouth, with a fine balance between fruits and tanins. An enjoyable wine, showing a charming pinot noir character.

Food matching

An aperitif with friends, with cured meats and charcuteries, shepherd’s pie, Peking-style duck.

History

Etienne Lebelin was the first chaplain of the Hospice de la Charité, and one of many members of the family to be a benefactor. This is an old-established Beaune family –seven Lebelins became Mayor, in the century from 1531. Jean-Jacques and Marguerite Lebelin gave 10,000 livres – an enormous sum at the time – to the Hôtel-Dieu in 1704, which was very welcome. This was a dark period for Beaune, of frosts, bad harvests, famine and wars, as Louis XIV’s reign drew to a close. Half of the vines constituting this Cuvée were planted in 1950, with the balance dating from 1951-76.
