Superb, intense red color. An enveloping, harmonious nose of red fruit with a hint of spice. Fine, almost delicate on the palate. Very good potential.

This cuvée is 100% Santenots, but with parcels that vary considerably in their clay content. The Santenots du Bas are not very stony, with deep, poorly draining clays. Those in the Plures sector are thinner and more chalky. It's certainly these differences that make this a complete, rich, dense wine with an assertive, rather "sustained" character for a Volnay. A wine for laying down, unquestionably.

Vinification and aging
This Volnay Santenots 1er Cru Cuvée Jehan de Massol has been skilfully vinified by the Domaine des Hospices de Beaune. Sold every year at the Hospices auction on the 3rd Sunday in November, Albert Bichot regularly buys this great wine on behalf of clients who then entrust us with its ageing in our cellars. During this important period, thanks to meticulous work and the blending of a variety of barrels, we further develop its complexity and potential.The Domaine des Hospices de Beaune has been certified organic since the 2024 harvest, and we naturally age your wine in our Albert Bichot cellars in line with this environmentally-friendly philosophy.
History of the cuvée
The Italian doctor Augustino Mazzoli, dazzled by the beauty of the town of Beaune, decided to take up residence here and became one of the Hôtel-Dieu's first doctors, practicing until his death in 1505. When he died in 1669, one of his descendants, the magistrate Jéhan de Massol, bequeathed a collection of works of art that saved the institution from ruin. The Cuvée is made up of the Premiers Crus Les Plures and Les Santenots, of which over 30% of the vines were planted between 1948 and 1959. The remaining vines have an average age of 51 years for 0.79 ha. and 33 years for 0.26 ha.
