Volnay 1er Cru Cuvée Blondeau

Domaine des Hospices de Beaune

Albert Bichot’s view

Luminous color. Complex nose of wild berries, black fruit and Morello cherry. The palate is beautifully elegant and structured, typical of the terroirs that make up this great wine.

Food pairings

Eggs en meurette, chicken with morel mushrooms, ribs with orange sauce.

This cuvée is composed of Taille-Pieds, Champans, Roncerets and Mitans. The Taille-Pieds parcel is located at the top of the hillside, with a white soil rich in small pebbles and very fine granulometry. All the ingredients needed to understand the very airy side of this cuvée. The Roncerets and Mitans provide tension and minerality with a slightly "tight" mid-palate, like the clays of which they are composed. Finally, the Champans are on a large, south-east-facing hillside with a steep slope. The soil is more chalky on the upper part, and deeper on the lower part. The result is fine, full-bodied, generous and powerful wines.

Vinification and aging

This Volnay 1er Cru Cuvée Blondeau has been skilfully vinified by the Domaine des Hospices de Beaune. Sold every year at the Hospices auction on the 3rd Sunday in November, Albert Bichot regularly buys this great wine on behalf of clients who then entrust us with its ageing in our cellars. During this important period, thanks to meticulous work and the blending of a variety of barrels, we further develop its complexity and potential.

Le Domaine des Hospices de Beaune est certifié bio depuis la récolte 2024 et bien entendu nous élevons dans nos caves Albert Bichot ce vin en respectant cette philosophie respectueuse de l’environnement.

History of the cuvée

In 1811, François Blondeau donated the bells for the Hospice de la Charité on rue de Lorraine in Beaune. He also had the Volnay church restored and a school built. To care for five elderly people in perpetuity, he donated all his vineyards in Pommard and Volnay. The composition of the Cuvée should not leave wine-lovers indifferent: the wine is 70% Champans and Taille Pieds, planted between 1952 and 1989. Ronceret, planted half in 1961 and half in 2005, and Mitans, planted between 1955 and 1972, make up the remainder.
