For the consecration of the chapel on 31st December 1451, Chancellor Rolin ordered a impressive retable (framed alterpiece), made up of 9 panels, from the famous Brussels painter, Rogier van der Weyden. Representing the Last Judgement, it was hung above the chapel altar. The incredible richness of the details and the symbolism of the painting make it a major work of art.

History: 5 centuries of vineyard legacies

In 1457, Guillemette, widow of Humbert Leverrier, followed in 1459 by Jean Plampays, made an original donation to the hospices: a parcel of vines. This custom continued through the centuries and still continues today.

It is a way for the patients or their family to thank the institution, to ensure its longevity, and to go down in history themselves! In fact, these benefactors have given their name to the majority of the 45 cuvées sold at auction (cuvée Blondeau, cuvée Charlotte Dumay, Cuvée Billardet…).

Pommard shares a worldwide reputation with its famous neighbour Beaune. Pinot Noir has dound in Pommard a perfect combination of soil, climate and know how to produce some of the most interesting red burgundies. It is thus a great pride to propose you this year to buy one of the most famous wines from the Hospices de Beaune estate : Pommard Epenots 1er Cru, Cuvée Dom Goblet.

With Les Rugiens on the other side of the village, Les Epenots are one of the most sought-after terroirs of Pommard. Both classified as Premier Crus (“first growth”), they currently try to make their quality even more renowned through a procedure of Grande Cru classification. An undisputable proof of the quality of this wine.

Our first tasting notes  (October 4th)
A drink-again wine right the start! Fresh fruits nose, very Pinot Noir (blackcurrant, raspberry). Complex mouth with a long finish. Things need to marry a bit but tanins are delicate and not too overwhelming. Good ageing potential.

Please click here to subscribe and buy with us this wine as futures with a very interesting price. An initiative that only the #1 buyer Albert Bichot proposes.

COMPOSITION

This Cuvée is composed from the following plot:

Les Petits Épenots

Total area : 0,70 ha

STORY OF THE CUVÉE

The Abbey of Cîteaux was a pioneer cultivating Burgundy’s vineyards. Records show a donation in 1260 of a Pommard vineyard named “En Espeneaul” (today written “Epenots”). In hommage to Cîteaux’s historic role, this Cuvée is named after the last cellarer of the Abbey, Dom Goblet, who worked until the Revolution, when the Cistercian order was dissolved, and its vineyards dispersed.

TERROIRS & DESCRIPTION

Its Pinot vines are over 50 years old and always amongst the first to ripen and be harvested, producing a subtly perfumed, harmonious wine. This cuvée is aging in oak barrels whose staves came from the forest of Cîteaux.
